After 18 months of unknown in our child’s education, many of us find ourselves back to our normal routines. But the inconsistent education routine that our children have all experienced have left us wondering what holes we need to fill and where our children may be lacking. We have created for you a guide to help you reinforce skills that your child needs to have mastered and ways that you can reinforce those skills. We hope you find this article to be helpful. Be sure to read to the very end where we provide a list of fun math games that you can play with your child to reinforce these skills.

Multiplication

Tip #1- Help your child firm up their foundation for multiplication. Skip counting is a fun way to do this. Take turns with different family members counting by 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s. Make it a fun game or turn it into a song!

Tip #2- Another way to practice multiplication while using fractions; have your child help you bake something and double or triple the recipe.

Subtraction

Tip #3- When you go to the grocery store, compare different brands of the same item. How much money do you save when purchasing the less expensive item?

Tip #4- Real life story problems can be fun and happen naturally in everyday family life! Give your child a $5 bill to spend at lunch and have them subtract the prices of the items they will buy. How much money will they have left over?

Strategy and Higher-Order Thinking

Tip #5- Does your child like sports? Perfect! Use statistics from players and games to discuss averages, changes over time and rank performances of different players!

Tip #6- As your child grows in more confidence with their math skills, they may be drawn to more strategic games. Games like Monopoly, Chess and Checkers are wonderful opportunities for your child to use logic, reasoning and strategy to improve on their critical thinking skills and ultimately help them improve their math skills.

Tip #7- If your child struggles with math, make an individualized chart for them, showing their improvement over time.

 Games

In everyday life, we find ourselves doing math ALL THE TIME. It is important that we recognize that and take those opportunities to show our children how we are constantly using math. Below are a few fun games that you can play with your child to reinforce math skills in a fun way!

Game #1- Mobi Math Tile Game- Think of this game like Dominoes for Math.            Game #3- Clumsy Thief. A thrilling money game. Players look at their dealt hand for any two cards that add to $100 to make money stacks.
